Why hybrid
A hybrid fund holds shares for growth and bonds for stability in one place, and rebalances for you. It suits goals 3–5 years away and investors who want a smoother ride than pure equity.
The types
| Type | Equity share | What it's for |
|---|---|---|
| Conservative hybrid | 10–25% | Mostly debt with a little growth |
| Balanced hybrid | 40–60% | Even split |
| Aggressive hybrid | 65–80% | Equity-led with a debt cushion |
| Dynamic asset allocation / balanced advantage | Changes with market valuations | Lets the fund decide the mix |
| Multi-asset allocation | At least 10% each in three or more asset classes (e.g. shares, debt, gold) | Spread across assets |
| Arbitrage | Uses price gaps between cash and futures markets | Low-risk, equity-taxed parking |
| Equity savings | Shares, arbitrage and debt | Lower volatility than equity |
The mix decides the tax
- At least 65% in Indian equity (aggressive hybrid, most balanced advantage, arbitrage and equity savings funds): taxed like equity — 20% within 12 months, 12.5% above ₹1.25 lakh after.
- More than 65% in debt (most conservative hybrid funds), units bought from April 2023: taxed at your slab rate.
- In between (many multi-asset and balanced hybrid funds): 12.5% after 24 months, slab rate before.
Check the fund's tax status in its documents — it follows what the fund actually holds.
Choosing one
Ask: how much equity can I live with if markets drop 30%? An aggressive hybrid with 75% equity could fall by around 20–25% in such a year; a conservative hybrid much less. Match the equity share to your comfort and goal date.
