Start with the goal, not the fund
"Best" depends on when you need the money:
| Goal is | Category to look at | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Under 3 years | Liquid, short duration debt funds, or RD | You can't afford a fall |
| 3–5 years | Hybrid (aggressive or balanced advantage), large cap | Some growth, some cushion |
| 5–10 years | Flexi cap, large & mid cap, index funds | Room for equity's swings |
| 10+ years | Core of index/flexi cap, plus some mid and small cap | Time to ride out falls |
We don't name funds: Oxon is not an investment adviser. Use the steps below, or speak to a SEBI-registered adviser.
How to compare funds in a category
- Long-term returns vs the benchmark — 5- and 10-year, and rolling returns if available. Ignore one-year rankings.
- Consistency — how often it beat its benchmark, and how deep its falls were.
- Expense ratio — choose the direct plan; lower costs compound in your favour.
- Fund size and manager — very large small cap funds can find it harder to invest; frequent manager changes can change the fund.
- Overlap — don't hold two funds that own the same top shares.
Make the SIP work harder
- Step it up: raising a ₹10,000 SIP by 10% a year for 10 years, at an assumed 12% return, grows to about ₹33.7 lakh, against ₹23.2 lakh without the step-up (see the calculator above). Returns are not guaranteed.
- Automate the debit right after salary day.
- Don't stop in a fall — falling markets are when SIPs buy the most units.
- Review once a year, rebalance if one part has grown too big, and move goal money to safer funds in the last 2–3 years.
Watch out for
- "Guaranteed return" SIPs — mutual funds can't guarantee returns.
- Picking last year's top fund.
- Too many funds; three or four are usually enough.
