What really differs
Certainty. An FD tells you today what you'll have on the maturity date. A fund doesn't. If the money is for a fee due next March, the certainty is worth more than a possible extra return.
Tax timing. FD interest is taxed each year as it accrues, even if you don't receive it. A debt fund's gain is taxed only when you redeem — at the same slab rate, but later, which lets the whole amount compound meanwhile.
Growth. Over long periods, equity funds have generally grown faster than deposits, but with years of losses along the way. A SIP smooths the buying price; it does not remove the risk.
A sensible split
- Emergency money (6 months of expenses): savings account and short FDs. See how much emergency fund.
- Goals 1–3 years away: FDs, RDs or debt funds.
- Goals 3–5 years away: a mix, such as hybrid funds with FDs.
- Goals 5+ years away: mostly equity funds, moving to safer options as the date nears.
