Your score is one number; your credit report is the story behind it. Lenders read the report, not only the score — so it pays to know what's in it and to check it for mistakes before you apply.
You can get one free full report a year from each of the four credit bureaus (TransUnion CIBIL, Experian, Equifax and CRIF High Mark).
1. Score and summary
The score (300–900) and a summary: number of accounts, total outstanding, overdue amounts and recent enquiries.
2. Personal information
Name, date of birth, gender, PAN and other IDs. Check spellings and numbers — a mismatch can delay a loan or merge someone else's data into your report.
3. Contact information
Addresses, phone numbers and email addresses reported by lenders over the years. Old addresses are normal; unknown ones are worth asking about.
4. Employment information
Occupation and income as reported by lenders, where available.
5. Account information — the most important part
One block per loan or card, showing:
- Lender and account type — personal loan, credit card, gold loan and so on
- Ownership — individual, joint, guarantor
- Dates — opened, last payment, closed
- Sanctioned amount or credit limit, current balance and amount overdue
- Payment history — month by month for up to 36 months, shown as DPD (days past due)
Reading DPD
| What you see | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 000 or STD | Paid on time (standard) |
| 030, 060, 090 | Paid that many days late |
| SMA | Special mention account — early stress |
| SUB, DBT, LSS | Substandard, doubtful, loss — serious default |
| XXX | No information reported for that month |
Account status
Watch for Written-off and Settled — both tell lenders the loan was not repaid in full. Read DPD, NPA, write-off and settlement explained.
6. Enquiries
Every time a lender checks your report because you applied for credit, an enquiry is recorded with the date, lender, purpose and amount. Many enquiries in a short time are a warning sign for lenders.
What to check before you apply
- Every loan and card listed is yours.
- Closed loans show as closed, with zero balance.
- No late payments you don't recognise.
- No accounts where you're a guarantor that you didn't agree to.
- Personal details are correct.
Found an error?
Raise a dispute on the bureau's website — it's free — and inform the lender that reported it. The bureau checks with the lender and updates the report if the lender confirms the correction. Lenders now report every fortnight (since January 2025), so corrections show up faster. Then follow how to improve your CIBIL score.
This guide is general information, not financial advice. Interest rates, fees, eligibility and other terms are set by each lender and can change; the figures in examples are illustrative only. Oxon Fintech is a loan facilitation platform, not a lender — loans are sanctioned and disbursed by our lending partners.
