What you can dispute
- Personal details: name spelling, date of birth, PAN, address, phone.
- An account that isn't yours, or one shown twice.
- Wrong status: a loan you closed shown as active, or "settled" when you paid in full.
- Wrong payment history: a month shown late that you paid on time.
- Wrong amounts: balance or overdue amount not matching your statement.
- An enquiry you never made.
You cannot dispute correct information you dislike — a real late payment stays until it ages out.
Step by step
- Get your free report from the bureau and note the account and the exact field that is wrong.
- On the bureau's website (for CIBIL, cibil.com), open your report's dispute section, pick the account or detail and explain the error. It costs nothing.
- Write to the lender too, through its grievance channel, with your proof: closure letter or NOC, payment receipts, bank statements.
- Note the dispute ID. The bureau marks the entry as "under dispute" and asks the lender to check.
- The lender confirms or corrects the data; the bureau updates your report and tells you the result.
The RBI timeline and compensation
And since 1 July 2026 lenders report every week, so once corrected, the change reaches your report quickly.
If the dispute is rejected
The bureau can only change data the lender confirms. If the lender insists the data is right and you disagree:
- Escalate to the lender's grievance redressal or nodal officer in writing.
- If there is no reply in 30 days, or you disagree with it, complain to the RBI Ombudsman on cms.rbi.org.in.
Settled vs closed
If you settled a loan for less than the dues, the report will say so and lenders read it as a loss to the lender. Paying the remaining amount and getting a fresh NOC lets the lender update the status to closed. See DPD, NPA, write-off and settlement explained.
Avoid "credit repair" fees
No agency can remove correct information, and everything above is free. Be wary of anyone who asks for money to "clean" your CIBIL.
Oxon Fintech is a loan facilitation platform, not a credit bureau. We do not check, sell, repair or change credit scores; get your report from the bureaus' own websites. Rules as checked on the date above.
