Indian weddings are joyful — and expensive. Many families use savings for part of the cost and a personal loan for the rest, so the celebration doesn't empty the emergency fund.
What a wedding loan can cover
A wedding loan is simply a personal loan used for wedding costs. Because it is usually unsecured and not tied to a specific purchase, it can cover:
- Venue, decoration and catering
- Jewellery and outfits
- Photography and entertainment
- Travel, guest accommodation and the honeymoon
- Advance payments to vendors
Plan the budget first
- List every cost and the date each payment is due — vendors often want advances months ahead.
- Decide what savings will cover and borrow only the gap.
- Add a buffer of around 10% for the costs that always appear late.
- Work out the EMI you can comfortably pay after the wedding, when the household budget may change. Use the EMI calculator.
Tips for borrowing well
- Apply a little ahead of the big advances, so the money is in your account when you need it.
- Choose a tenure that fits — a longer tenure lowers the EMI but costs more interest. See how EMI is calculated.
- Compare the full cost — interest, processing fee and GST, as shown in the lender's Key Fact Statement.
- Avoid carrying wedding spends on a credit card if you can't repay in full — card interest is far higher. See personal loan vs credit card.
