Search for a loan and you'll see promises like "loan in 5 minutes" or "instant approval". Some of it is real; some of it is marketing; and some of it is bait. Here's how to tell the difference. Ready to apply? See instant personal loan for how the digital process works.
What can genuinely happen in minutes
- Filling in the application — a short online form.
- Sharing your bank statements — through the RBI-regulated Account Aggregator framework, in a few taps.
- An automated eligibility check — many lenders run rule-based checks quickly.
- A pre-approved offer — if your own bank already knows your account and repayment history, it may show an offer you can accept online quickly.
What usually takes longer
- Verifying identity, income and documents, especially for a new customer or larger amount
- Manual review when something doesn't match
- Signing the agreement and setting up auto-debit (e-mandate)
- Disbursal, which depends on the lender's process
So "instant" usually describes the application or the decision — not a guarantee that money lands in your account in five minutes.
Red flags in "instant loan" offers
- Approval promised regardless of credit history or income
- A fee demanded before the loan is paid
- The app asks for access to your contacts, photos or media — genuine lending apps are not allowed this under RBI rules (see digital lending rules)
- No bank or NBFC named on the offer, and no Key Fact Statement
- Very short tenures (7–30 days) with charges that add up to an extreme yearly cost
If you see these, stop. Read how to avoid loan fraud, and report suspected fraud at 1930 or cybercrime.gov.in.
How to get a genuine loan faster
- Keep PAN, Aadhaar and bank access ready.
- Make sure your name and details match everywhere.
- Apply for an amount your income supports — use the loan eligibility calculator.
- Share statements digitally instead of uploading PDFs.
- Apply once rather than to many lenders.
