A family member asks you to "just sign" as a co-applicant or guarantor on their loan. Before you do, understand what you are signing — because in both cases, you can be asked to repay.
Co-applicant (co-borrower)
A co-applicant applies together with the main borrower. Their income is usually added when the lender works out eligibility, and both are equally responsible for repayment from day one. The loan appears on both credit reports.
Common for: spouses or parent and child taking a loan together, especially where combined income supports a larger amount.
Guarantor
A guarantor doesn't borrow, but promises to repay if the borrower doesn't. The guarantor's income may not be counted for eligibility, but their credit standing reassures the lender. The loan shows on the guarantor's report as a guaranteed account, and a default can affect the guarantor's credit too.
Common for: business loans, education loans, or where the main borrower's profile alone isn't enough.
Side by side
| Co-applicant | Guarantor | |
|---|---|---|
| Borrows the money | Yes, jointly | No |
| Income counted for eligibility | Usually yes | Usually not |
| Liable to repay | Yes, equally from the start | Yes, if the borrower defaults |
| Shown on credit report | Yes | Yes, as a guarantor |
| Can affect your ability to borrow | Yes — the EMI counts in your FOIR | Can, especially after a default |
Before you agree
- Only sign for an amount you could repay yourself if needed.
- Read the agreement and the Key Fact Statement.
- Ask for repayment updates — missed EMIs will show on your report too. Check it from time to time; see how to read your CIBIL report.
- Know that stepping out later is hard — the lender usually must agree.
For borrowers
A co-applicant with a steady income and good score can improve your eligibility. Choose someone who understands the commitment, and keep them informed.
