Many Indian households have gold at home, so when money is needed quickly, a gold loan is often the first idea. A personal loan is the other common option. Both can work; they suit different situations.
How a gold loan works
You pledge gold jewellery (or coins, within limits) with a bank or NBFC. The lender values it and lends a percentage of its value, within the loan-to-value limits set by the RBI. You repay through EMIs, interest-only payments, or a single payment at the end (bullet), depending on the product, and get your gold back when the loan is closed.
How a personal loan works
No collateral. The lender decides based on your income, credit score and existing EMIs. You get a fixed amount and repay it in fixed EMIs over the tenure.
Side by side
| Gold loan | Personal loan | |
|---|---|---|
| Collateral | Your gold | None |
| Credit score needed | Matters less, as the loan is secured | Important |
| Income proof | Often minimal | Usually needed |
| Amount | Linked to the value of your gold | Linked to income and credit profile |
| Tenure | Usually short — months to a few years | Usually 1 to 5 years |
| Repayment | EMI, interest-only or bullet options | Fixed EMIs |
| Main risk | Gold can be auctioned if you don't repay | Credit score damage and recovery action |
These are typical patterns; rates and terms vary by lender.
When a gold loan can make sense
- You need money for a short time and expect to repay soon.
- You have little credit history or a low score.
- The amount needed is well covered by the gold you're willing to pledge.
When a personal loan can make sense
- You don't want to pledge family jewellery.
- You need a longer tenure with predictable EMIs.
- Your income and credit profile are strong.
- The amount needed is more than your gold would support.
Things to watch
- In a gold loan, a fall in gold prices can lead the lender to ask for more margin.
- Don't miss payments on a gold loan — auction rules apply after notice.
- Compare the APR in the Key Fact Statement for both.
- Pledge only with a regulated bank or NBFC and get a proper receipt with weight and purity.
