If you run a small business, a lender may ask, "Do you have a Udyam certificate?" It takes minutes to get, costs nothing, and can make your loan application smoother. Here is what you need to know.
What is Udyam registration?
Udyam registration is the government's official registration for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs). It replaced the older Udyog Aadhaar in July 2020. Once registered, you get a permanent Udyam Registration Number and an e-certificate that shows your enterprise's category — micro, small or medium.
From 1 April 2025 the categories are:
| Category | Investment up to | Turnover up to |
|---|---|---|
| Micro | ₹2.5 crore | ₹10 crore |
| Small | ₹25 crore | ₹100 crore |
| Medium | ₹125 crore | ₹500 crore |
Who can register
Any enterprise doing manufacturing or services — a proprietorship, partnership, LLP, private limited company, co-operative or trust — as long as it is within the medium-enterprise limits. Retail and wholesale traders can also register for priority-sector lending purposes.
What you need
- Aadhaar of the proprietor, managing partner or authorised director
- PAN of the business (and of the proprietor for a proprietorship)
- GSTIN, where the business is required to have one
- Bank account details and basic business information — activity, address, number of employees
Investment and turnover figures are picked up from the PAN and GST systems.
How to register
- Go to the official portal, udyamregistration.gov.in. Registration there is free.
- Verify Aadhaar with an OTP.
- Enter PAN; it is validated online.
- Fill in business details — name, type, address, activity (NIC code), bank account.
- Submit and verify with an OTP. The certificate is issued online.
How it helps with a business loan
- Proof the business exists — a simple, government-issued document lenders recognise.
- Access to MSME schemes — schemes like CGTMSE (collateral-free credit guarantees) and others are meant for registered MSMEs.
- Priority-sector lending — banks have targets for lending to MSMEs, so a registered MSME fits those programmes.
- Protection on delayed payments — micro and small enterprises have legal protection against late payment from buyers under the MSMED Act.
A Udyam certificate on its own does not guarantee a loan. Lenders still look at turnover, banking history and credit record — see the business loan eligibility guide.
Keep it updated
Update your Udyam details when your business information changes. Category changes from revised turnover or investment are applied by financial year.
