Budgeting doesn't have to mean tracking every rupee. The 50/30/20 rule gives you three buckets that are easy to remember and adjust.
The three buckets
- 50% — Needs: rent or home loan EMI, groceries, utilities, school fees, insurance premiums, transport, minimum loan payments.
- 30% — Wants: eating out, shopping, entertainment, travel, upgrades.
- 20% — Savings and extra debt payments: emergency fund, investments, and paying loans down faster.
An example
| Bucket | Share | On ₹60,000 take-home |
|---|---|---|
| Needs | 50% | ₹30,000 |
| Wants | 30% | ₹18,000 |
| Savings / extra debt payments | 20% | ₹12,000 |
Where do EMIs go?
Regular EMIs for a home, vehicle or personal loan are needs. Paying more than the EMI to clear a loan early comes from the 20%. If EMIs alone push "needs" well above half your income, that's a signal to slow new borrowing — see how much EMI you can afford.
Adjust it to your life
- High rent city or big family? Needs may be 60%; trim wants first.
- Paying off costly debt? Shift wants into the 20% until it's cleared — see getting out of a debt trap.
- Irregular income? Budget on your lowest typical month and save the surplus in good months.
Make it automatic
- On salary day, move the 20% to a separate account, an RD or a SIP.
- Keep the emergency fund separate — see how much you need.
- Use auto-debit for EMIs and bills so nothing is missed.
- Review once a month; adjust, don't abandon.
A steady budget also makes borrowing easier when you need it: on-time EMIs build your credit score and a healthy bank balance helps your application.
